Jimmy Lee Day II, band director at East Middle School in Aurora, Colorado, has been named 2023 Colorado Teacher of the Year. This marks the first time a Black male educator has received the prestigious honor in the state.
Day was first recognized in October 2022 during a surprise ceremony at the middle school where he has taught instrumental music since 2017. Over the course of his 14-year teaching career, Day has rebuilt three struggling band programs into award-winning ensembles.
Passion For Music Education
As band director, Day teaches 6th-8th grade instrumental music. He has transformed his programs into superior-rated groups that have earned top honors at district music festivals under his leadership.
Day’s success stems from his ability to connect with students and set high expectations. “My connection is that I make myself human like you, and we connect as a result,” Day explained in an interview.
He passionately imparts life lessons through music while helping students develop confidence and instrumental skills.
Statewide and National Recognition
In March 2023, Colorado State Senator Rhonda Fields gave Day special recognition on the Senate floor. As 2023 Colorado Teacher of the Year, he will attend ceremonies and events at the state and national level.
This includes opportunities such as Space Camp at NASA, joining the Commissioner’s Teacher Cabinet, and being honored at the White House alongside Teachers of the Year from other states.
Continued Commitment
Day said he will continue emphasizing the importance of music education in the coming year. Through his exceptional teaching that transforms students’ lives, he exemplifies the profound impact educators can have.
As the first Black male recipient of Colorado’s highest teaching honor, Day inspires students and paves the way for future educators of color. His passion and commitment to students make him extremely deserving of this prestigious recognition.
