18-year-old aviation trailblazer Ariel Messam recently earned a historic distinction – becoming the youngest woman of color to attain certification as a private pilot in New York state. Hailing from Jamaica, Queens, her remarkable achievement beats immense odds.

Conquering Skies With Tenacity

Since age 14 when she took her first flight, Messam worked tirelessly to turn her aviation dreams into reality.

After graduating high school in 2022 with mechanic certifications, she quickly accelerated flight training while instructing youth virtually.

Sky’s The Limit At Aviation-Focused School

Messam first cultivated her pilot dreams at Aviation High School in Queens, earning her diploma along with aircraft technician credentials.

She also played varsity basketball at the specialized academy, demonstrating skill in balancing varied pursuits.

Paying Knowledge Forward

The teen shares her expertise with next-gen pilots by working as a flight simulation instructor for a nonprofit founded by her brother called Level Up and Take Off. Its mission is increasing diversity in aviation fields.

Inspiring Younger Generations

As likely the youngest and only female minority pilot at most airfields, Messam takes pride in representing possibility for those doubting their potential. Her bigger vision remains supporting inclusion across the industry.

At age 18, Ariel Messam won’t legally be able to vote or drink a toast to her monumental aviation achievement for a few more years.

But she can fly a plane solo across New York skies thanks to just earned pilot certification – which no woman of color has done here at such a remarkably young age.

When this Queens native took maiden voyage at 14, inhaling ambition stronger than high-altitude air, aviation planted its flag in her soul.
