In a historic first, USA Hockey has named Brett Peterson the general manager of the 2024 US men’s national hockey team. Peterson, the assistant GM of the Florida Panthers, becomes the first Black GM in the history of US hockey’s international squads.
Blazing a Trail in Hockey
Peterson has smashed several racial barriers over his career. In 2020, the Panthers made him the first Black assistant general manager in NHL history. Prior to that landmark, he was the first Black NHL executive in any capacity during stints as a player agent and hockey executive.
As Panthers’ assistant GM in the past two seasons, Peterson played an integral role in helping build their roster and hockey operations.
Bringing His NHL Expertise
While leading the effort, Peterson will work closely with USA Hockey’s advisory group of 10 top NHL GMs. They will provide input on naming the American squad for the 2024 IIHF World Championship this May in Czechia.
Over a playing career that peaked winning an NCAA championship with Boston College, Peterson discovered hockey’s uncanny ability to provide opportunities if passions run deep enough.
Leaning On USA Hockey’s Brain Trust
As the first Black general manager in US hockey history, Brett Peterson keeps blazing trails opening doors for others to follow. When USA Hockey appointed him GM of its NHL National Team, they tapped his unique expertise gained from barrier-breaking NHL executive roles.
Continuing to Grow the Game
Peterson aims to build a competitive roster that represents America with speed, skill and the right playing style. But his groundbreaking appointment also spotlights hockey’s ongoing efforts to create opportunities that make the sport more inclusive.
